The CENTER’s Black Box
We're excited to announce that we're currently seeking pitches for our new Black Box space for 2025 and beyond!
This versatile space serves as our daytime dance studio, hosting classes and rehearsals. However, it also transforms into a fully functional performance venue for emerging artists, directors, and performers. With a seating capacity of up to 40 people, the Black Box allows for various seating arrangements, and its adaptable nature encourages creative use of movable and temporary elements.
For those unfamiliar with the concept, a black box theater is a performance space characterized by its black walls and flat floor. Known for its simplicity, black box theaters offer intimate settings that foster direct connections between performers and audiences, making it ideal for exploring "pure" theatre experiences.
As you prepare your pitches, please consider the unique features of our Black Box Space. Keep in mind the limitations regarding lighting, sound, and set pieces, and aim for productions that utilize the space creatively. We encourage you to think about cast size and select sets, props, and costumes that align with the intimate and immersive atmosphere of our black box theater.
Before submitting your pitch, please review the following information:
- Intimate Setting: Our Black Box space is designed for intimate performances, accommodating a maximum of 40 audience members. Performances should be tailored to a cozy, minimalistic environment.
- Minimal Set and Cast: Due to space constraints, we prioritize performances with minimal set designs and limited cast sizes. This helps maximize the audience experience and conforms to the intimate nature of the space.
- Seeking New Work: We are eager to feature new works from emerging directors, playwrights, and performers. While we have a strong interest in novel creations, we remain open to a variety of performance genres that are appropriate for an intimate setting.
- Independent Productions: Please note that this is not a CENTERstage-produced production. If selected, you will be responsible for all aspects of the production, including fundraising, promotion, and preparation.
- Rehearsal Space: Use of rehearsal space is not automatically included. It may be negotiated based on availability and other considerations.
- Submission Process: Submitting a pitch does not guarantee selection. We will contact you if we have questions or if your proposal aligns with available space and scheduling.
