CENTERstage Productions is thrilled to announce open auditions for The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, with music and lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg, and background music by Herbert Stothart. This production is directed by Hannah Corneau with musical direction by Paul and JoAnne Schubert and choreography by Jordan Stroly.

Performance Dates: June 6 - 29, 2025, Fridays at 8PM, Saturdays & Sundays at 3PM

Seeking: We are seeking a cast of 23-25 actors. 8 principal roles, 15-17 ensemble members. Children ages 10 and older and teenagers are strongly encouraged to audition. This is a volunteer-based community theatre production with no monetary compensation.

We strongly encourage women, persons of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals to audition. We are committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of our work.

Auditions are open call and not by appointment.

Prepare / Bring: 

  • Prepare 16–32 bars (about 30 seconds to 1 minute) of a favorite song that exemplifies your true spirit! We recommend singing a song from the show, but it is not required.

  • Bring sheet music or have a backing track downloaded and ready to play from a device (our internet can be unreliable!).

  • A headshot and resume are welcome but not required.

  • Be ready to provide a list of any schedule conflicts.

To submit a virtual audition, send a video to centerwizardofoz@gmail.com by Monday, March 17th. All auditioners must be available to attend the callback in person.

You are welcome to review the callback materials in advance HERE. Please note that these materials may be updated or changed before the callbacks, and we may not be able to use all of them on the day. You will also find the AUDITION FORM that includes a potential rehearsal schedule in this folder. Feel free to print it out and complete it prior to your audition.

There will be a dance call at callbacks.

Character Breakdown:

Dorothy Gale (Audition Age 10-15)
Mezzo/Mix (G to E) – Strong singer with full sound.
Minimal dancing; must be comfortable and natural onstage.

A strong-willed yet caring young girl who embarks on a journey through Oz. Must be highly likable and energetic.

Hunk / Scarecrow (Audition Age 18+)
Strong Baritone (up to F#, opt. Ab) – Excellent musical timing.
Major dancing role; must be agile, flexible, and expressive.

A lovable and intelligent character who believes he lacks brains. Requires strong physical acting to portray a man without bones. Hunk should subtly hint at the Scarecrow’s traits.

Hickory / Tin-Man (Audition Age 18+)
Baritone/Tenor (to G)
Light choreography, but movement is restricted.

A caring and emotional character who believes he lacks a heart. Must portray warmth despite stiff physicality. Hickory should subtly reflect the Tin-Man’s gentle nature.

Zeke / Cowardly Lion (Audition Age 18+)
Strong Baritone (to F) – Excellent comedic timing.
Light choreography; must move with animal-like agility.

A lovable, larger-than-life comedic role. Though he claims to lack courage, he proves otherwise throughout the journey. Requires strong characterization and body language.

Glinda the Good Witch / Aunt Em (Audition Age 35+)
Mezzo/Soprano (G to C) – Strong singer.
Some dance required.

A regal and nurturing presence. Glinda is poised and elegant, while Aunt Em is a warm, caring maternal figure. A subtle connection between the two roles should be evident.

Miss Gulch / Wicked Witch (Audition Age 25+)
Non-dancing role.

A powerful and iconic villain with no redeeming qualities. Requires a strong voice, commanding presence, and bold physical characterization. Miss Gulch should subtly reflect the Witch’s sinister nature.

Professor Marvel / Wizard of Oz (Audition Age 30+)
Non-dancing role.

A charming yet mysterious character. As Professor Marvel, he is a fortune teller with a roguish but kind demeanor. As the Wizard, he must have a strong, commanding presence while remaining likable.

Uncle Henry / Oz Guard (Audition Age 35+)
Baritone (Bb to B) – Strong comic vocalist.

A kind and hardworking farmer who deeply cares for Dorothy. Also plays the quirky and comedic Oz Guard, requiring strong character acting and presence.

Ensemble Characters include Munchkins, Ozians, Winkies, Flying Monkeys, Crows, Trees, Jitterbugs, with featured speaking/vocal/dancing roles available. Many roles available for children and teenagers. Gymnastic Ability desired for Flying Monkeys.
