CENTERstage Productions announces open auditions for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

In Shakespeare’s masterpiece, the daughter and son of two feuding families meet, fall in love, and marry. The union of the star-crossed lovers eventually leads to tragic consequences. This production will explore the force of love, the inevitability of fate and the chasm between adults and their children.

Location: The CENTER for Performing Arts at Rhinebeck.

 

Performance Dates: April 11 – April 27, 2025, Fridays and Saturdays at 8PM, Sundays at 3PM & Saturday 4/26 3PM Matinee

*There are school performances scheduled for 10 am on Friday, April 11 and Thursday, April 24.  Please be prepared at auditions to list all conflicts during rehearsal period.

Seeking: An ensemble of actors to play 18 characters. Teen actors are encouraged to audition. There will be some doubling of roles.  Many of the roles can be cast against gender stereotypes. We strongly encourage women, persons of color, and LGBTQ+ individuals to audition.  We are dedicated to equity, diversity and inclusion in all areas of our work.

 

Please prepare: Monologues or speeches from Romeo and Juliet or any Shakespeare play.  Scenes will be provided for callbacks.

Casting Breakdown:

JULIET:  young woman, 17 – 25.  Privileged, rich girl who is strong willed and smart.  She is her own best advocate and doesn’t adhere to societal rules and roles.

 

CAPULET:  Juliet’s father, 40s -- 60s. A bit of a bully, but with a soft spot for Juliet.  Loves the sound of his own voice.

 

LADY CAPULET: Juliet’s mother, 40s – 50s.  Tries to manage her bully of a husband and willful daughter.  Tough and not very affectionate as either a wife or mother.

 

NURSE to Juliet, 50s -60s.  She is warm, affectionate, and funny.  She has made Juliet the center of her life.  Sometimes impulsive but always good intentioned.

 

TYBALT:  Cousin to Juliet, 20s to 30s.  Violent tempered, wedded to the city’s blood feud.  Driven by his hatred of Romeo and his family.

 

PETER:  Any age.  Head servant to the Capulets.  A bit of a bumbler, but good natured.

 

ROMEO:  Young man, 17 – 25.   Impulsive and passionate.  He is an idealist and wears his emotions on his sleeve. 

 

MONTAGUE:  Romeo’s father, 40s – 60’s.  He is concerned about his son.  Tired of the constant fighting.

 

LADY MONTAGUE:  Romeo’s mother, 40s – 60s.  Also worried about Romeo.  Loves her husband and her son.

 

BENVOLIO:  Cousin to Romeo, 20s – 30s.  A well-bred young man, grounded and logical. Protective of Romeo his best friend.  He’s a peace keeper.

 

ESCALUS:  Prince of Verona, 30s – 60s.  A just ruler, exhausted and frustrated by the blood feud in his city.

 

PARIS:  Prince’s kinsman 25 – 35.  Rich and well bred, he is a suitor to Juliet.

 

MERCUTIO: Nephew to the Prince, 25 – 35.  He is the close friend of Romeo and Benvolio.  A tortured man, he is hot-headed, and witty with a dark and reckless streak. 

 

FRIAR LAWRENCE:  The local priest, 35 – 50.  Dedicated to ending the feud and bringing peace to the city.  He is a mentor to Romeo, counseling him on life and love.  His desire to bring peace overtakes his better judgement.

 

Friar John, Apothecary, Servants, Pages, and Citizens of Verona.  All to be played by the ensemble.
